So a couple of weeks ago, in true quarantined fashion, I decided to revamp both bathrooms in my house. Nothing crazy…just a little "glow up" from what we were already working with…which was just your typical builder-grade bathroom.

I'm going for more "modern farmhouse" bathroom decor, and last week I showed you how I built a frame for both bathroom mirrors the easy way…as in bypassing those annoying plastic mirror clips in what is now my favorite new hack. 😉

This week I'm showing you how I built a DIY towel rack to go in the bathroom in seriously one of the cheapest, but most expensive looking DIYs I've ever done! I love how it turned out! This modern farmhouse towel rack was the perfect addition to my small guest bathroom.

Farmhouse DIY Towel Rack

Like I said, our small guest bathroom has all the standard builder-grade stuff in it. Nothing horrible…just basic. And honestly, this "project" was too easy not to do. Here's a little before and after peek.

What a difference, right?? And y'all, when I say this DIY towel rack was easy…I mean easy.

Farmhouse Towel Rack Materials and Costs

There are so many awesome modern towel rack ideas out there. But, one of the reasons I love this project so much is because I just used scrap wood that I already had on hand to make it.

I always get my wood cut at Home Depot when I'm gathering materials for a DIY….and I always take the leftover scrap wood home with me (you're already paying for it, so why not?).

Pro Tip: If you don't have scrap wood, go to your local home improvement store and ask if they have any. Most will just give it to you for free!

You can literally use any kind of wood for this DIY towel rack…the size and type of wood isn't really that important. If you have scrap wood on hand, great! If not, got to Home Depot and get them the cut the cheapest wood you can find (other than plywood) to your desired size.

Also, the real star of the show….these beautiful hooks! You guys: they come in a pack of ten on Amazon and are under $15. Plus, they come with the screws you need…major win! You can make 2-3 farmhouse towel or coat racks with these hooks…which is exactly what I did!

DIY Towel Rack Materials:

  • Scrap wood: free!
  • Hooks: I am in love with these from Amazon!
  • Stain or paint: Dark Walnut is my go-to stain for all my projects!
  • *Screws (or other) to attach to wall: see note below

*For the purpose of this blog post, I'm going to show you how I hung the towel rack using screws . However, for the towel rack in our master bathroom is used these Command [velcro-y] Picture Hanging Strips and they actually worked out great! They hold up to 16 lbs, so if you're looking to keep from drilling holes in your wall, this is definitely the way to go.

How To: DIY Towel Rack

So: you wanna know how to make a towel hanger…or rack, if you will. Keep reading for the step-by-step tutorial and pics!

1.Stain or paint your board. If your wood is rough, you may need to do some light sanding first (I didn't need to). Then apply however many coats of stain you'd like (drying between each coat). I did 3 coats of Dark Walnut for the towel rack in on guest bathroom.

This is also the color stain I used to make a frame for the guest bathroom mirror!

2. Measure the studs on the wall, mark it on your towel rack, and then drill pilot holes into your board. Ok, so this is the not-fun part of any project I do…measuring. Bleh. I wanted to make sure this towel rack was super sturdy, so I wanted to drill the farmhouse towel rack straight into the wall. I didn't hang the rack….I drilled it to the wall. And because I wanted to make sure that sucker wasn't going anywhere, I measured where the studs were so I could drill it straight into the studs.

You still with me? I'm not drilling it to the wall during this step…just measuring where the screws will be on my towel rack and drilling the pilot holes (you can see them if you look closely on the previous picture).

***If you're not down with drilling holes in the wall, skip the step completely by using these nifty little hangers (it's how I hung the DIY farmhouse towel rack in our master bathroom).

3.Place your hooks on your board and drill. I totally eyeballed the placement of the hooks, drilled pilot holes, and then screwed in the middle two hooks only . And here's why:

I purposely made sure that the 2 outside hooks would be covering the 2 screws that would be drilled into the wall. Because of this, I couldn't add the 2 outer hooks until I drilled the towel rack to the wall. But , I did go ahead and drill the pilot holes so I could add them easily once the towel rack was screwed to the wall the wall.

4. Drill the farmhouse towel rack to the wall. Using a level, line up the two pilot holes on your board to where you plan on drilling the screws into the wall. Remember, the two outer hooks are missing because we're covering the screws with the hooks. It should look something like this when you're done.

5. Screw in the 2 outer hooks. You should already have pilot holes drilled for the outer hooks, so this part is easy. Just screw in the two outer hooks…which will be covering the unsightly screws that are holding your DIY farmhouse towel rack to the wall, and voila! You're finished!

If you don't want to use screws in your wall:

If you don't want to use screws in your wall, you can make this project even easier by screwing all of your hooks into your board at once, and then use these Command Heavy Duty Picture Hanging Strips to attach it to your wall! They're just like regular Command strips, except more "velcro-y" to allow it to hold more weight.

This is what I used to hang our DIY farmhouse towel rack in our master bathroom, and it has worked great!
